This Building Regulations 2008 have certain codes when it comes to the safe handling of asbestos. In the Acts s26 (3), the section refers to the applications required for building approval that require removing bonded asbestos from residential building. The application submitted by the building needs to include the description of the procedure that will be used for removing the sheeting of bonded asbestos from the building. Also this method must comply with the asbestos removal code.
Act s26 (3) also includes the applications required for procedure to remove any other type of asbestos other than bonded asbestos from the building. This application needs to include information such as: the procedure that will be used for the removal of the non bonded asbestos, the approximate amount and type of asbestos that is to be removed, the equipment proposed in removing the asbestos, which needs to include protective personal wear and finally the program details, which are prepared according to the asbestos removal code. All this including monitoring airborne asbestos that needs to be followed up on during removal.
The requirements of the plans for removing bonded asbestos according to the Act, s 27 (1) (a) need to have documentation of the places where the bonded asbestos sheeting is located, only then can an approval be given for the building work. As for the removal of other asbestos other that bonded asbestos from residential building requires the following information.
• Where the asbestos is located, for which there is a removal proposal.
• The working boundary for those who will be handling the asbestos.
• In a case where the asbestos that is removed needs to be stored in an area close to the residential building then where exactly will this asbestos be stored.
• Where and which decontamination will be used? Also is the air filter and air supply equipment being used as per the asbestos code.
It must be noted here that the qualification and occupations of handling small amounts of bonded asbestos as pert the Act, s 152 is declared in schedule 1, item 25 part1.3. Hence the general Building Regulation effectively covers and keeps in check the asbestos handling in the building construction.
